Where the numbers in this review come from
OpenWhispr's pricing page opens with "Free forever. Upgrade when you want more." The free tier is genuinely free, so this is not a bait and switch, but there are two things the page presents in a way that is easy to misread.
The first is the headline price. Pro displays as $6.67 per user per month, with $80 per user billed annually underneath it in smaller type. The page has a monthly and annual toggle, and it loads with annual selected. The monthly price is not shown on the card at all. It is, however, written out in the page's own FAQ, which says: "Pro is $8/month, or $80/year (two months free). Business is $16/user/month, or $160/user/year."
$6.67 or $8 depends entirely on how you pay
The second thing worth reading closely is what separates the tiers, because it is not what most free-versus-paid comparisons assume. The free plan is not a crippled trial. It is a complete local dictation app with no usage limit at all. What you pay for is their servers.

Read the Local models column and then the Cloud column. That is the entire commercial logic of this product. Running a model on your hardware costs OpenWhispr nothing, so they give it away without limit. Running one on their hardware costs them money, so the free allowance there is 2,000 words a week.
That number deserves a second look, because it is the same free allowance Wispr Flow offers, and Wispr Flow is the product OpenWhispr names as its target. On the cloud side, free-versus-free, the two are identical. The difference is that OpenWhispr puts an unlimited local option underneath it and Wispr Flow does not. Everything genuinely distinctive about the free tier lives in local mode.

"Is OpenWhispr safe" is one of the most common searches attached to this product, which makes sense: you are being asked to install something that listens to your microphone constantly and types into every application you use. The answer is reassuring, with two qualifications people tend to skip.
